summary: "Daniel and Angelina launch Volume 3 of Scotomaville by teaching that finding our WHY must precede finding our WAY. Full commitment to the Personal Everest expedition triggers providence (W.H. Murray), illustrated by Daniel finding $118 on a remote Nevada roadside while cycling and a timely Venmo payment arriving minutes after a Purple Heart meeting and partial gas fill-up. They weave Marcus Aurelius, Philippians 4:6-8, Tolstoy, Blaise Pascal, and extensive archival Enterprising Cycle footage to show how perception, action, and will turn obstacles into the path itself."
keypoints:
  - "WHY precedes WAY: once you fully commit to an expedition (journey with purpose), provision and guidance appear that would never have occurred otherwise."
  - "The obstacle is the way — Marcus Aurelius: the mind adapts and converts impediments into fuel for action."
  - "Deathbed regret is a powerful motivator: picture yourself at the end of life and ask what you would deeply regret not having done."
  - "Provision follows commitment: Daniel’s real-time stories of roadside cash and immediate payment confirm W.H. Murray and Scripture (Philippians 4)."
  - "Legacy through video journaling: 30+ years of documenting expeditions and scotomas equips future generations to see with new eyes."

### Original YouTube Description

It seems to me that finding our WAY in life is closely related to finding our WHY. Once we chose a route, fully commit to that path, THEN provision and guidance reveals itself. That's what W.H. Murray wrote about conquering a challenge. I believe WHY precedes WAY.

I found money on the side of the road twenty-five miles from Baker Nevada, heading toward the Great Basin National Park. I was NO WHERE. Provision was NOW HERE.

It's 2 A.M. as I write this. I woke up compelled to post this video - NOW. In six hours Angelina and I are to meet with another provision. It seems that guidance which results in provision closely follows commitment to a course of action. It's fertile ground for fear - or faith.

Philippians 4: 6-8; "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."

"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."

It seems to be true - again.

"The Greatest Expedition you will ever undertake is the journey to self-understanding, as the prize is not in discovering new lands, but in seeing with new eyes." Daniel Comp

The obstacle is the way seems what Marcus Aurelius advised:
"Our actions may be impeded . . . but there can be no impeding our intentions or dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way."

Perception, action, and will are the three disciplines for overcoming challenges, and finding our way.

"Follow in the way I began" wrote Blaise Pascal.

"the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way."

ChatGPT Review:
The second episode of Scotomaville Volume Three, "SCOTOMAVILLE v3.01 Finding our WY," explores the intricate relationship between finding our WAY and finding our WHY in life. The theme of personal growth and introspection is once again at the forefront, with an emphasis on the importance of commitment, faith, and determination.

Like the previous video, this episode also presents personal experiences as metaphors for broader life lessons. For example, finding money on the side of the road while in the middle of nowhere symbolizes how provision and guidance can appear unexpectedly once we commit to our path. The video goes on to elaborate on this concept by citing W.H. Murray's quote on commitment leading to providence, which aligns perfectly with your message of fully committing to one's personal journey.

This video also integrates spiritual aspects, bringing in philosophical teachings from Marcus Aurelius and biblical scriptures to underscore the importance of perception, action, and will in overcoming challenges and finding our way. You are encouraging viewers to persist in the face of obstacles, adapting to them, and using them as a way forward.

In essence, the episode continues the themes of self-awareness and personal growth but puts more emphasis on the power of commitment and faith in finding one's purpose and direction in life. It reassures viewers that challenges are part of the journey, and overcoming them leads to personal development. The discussion of guidance and provision appearing once we commit to our path also introduces an element of faith and spirituality.

So, this video remains consistent with the overall theme of your content, encouraging self-reflection, commitment, resilience, and adaptability, while also integrating a strong spiritual component.

### Cleaned Transcript

**Daniel:**
Yeah we’re gonna take the trash out and you’ve seen this. That was a familiar thing but not in the snow. We’re going to start Volume Three with this episode on finding a way. Meaning if you intend to fully commit to an expedition—a journey with a purpose—you really need to have in your mind an outcome that you want. And most certainly there are crevasses between the idea and the outcome: challenges not just production challenges, scheduling, financial, emotional, market challenges—all sorts of things.

And finding the time—or better, making the effort consistently—to produce your videos will be a hurdle.

Marcus Aurelius: you’ll read “The Obstacle Is the Way.” Discovering why you want to create your own journey, why do you want to document it, who does it matter for—yourself, your family, as a legacy. All of those.

Anthony Robbins once shared that if you can’t find the motivation from within to get to where you want to go, don’t look forward but picture yourself on your deathbed. What is it that you will deeply regret in hindsight? You see, that can be greatly motivating.

**Angelina:**
If you would regret having not done it… that sounds interesting to think about yeah.

**Daniel:**
One of the things that Angelina and I do regularly to expand our beliefs is to see what’s possible so that we could imagine fabulous outcome—kind of a moonshot if you will. Finding a way often means attempting something larger than you think you’re capable of. And the saying goes that if you try to make it to the moon and fail, at least you’ll get your butt over your neighbor’s fence.

And it’s done hour by hour, editing and minute by minute seeing “what if.” Volume Three, as I can see now, is a how-to. Thank you. Showing that you won’t get there the first time; it’ll take numerous attempts before you come to a summit that you’re pleased with.

Let’s have a look at some of the early attempts I did. If you’re in business for yourself I bet you know what this feels like.

Oh boy, here’s something that you don’t see every day. I’m like in the middle of nowhere—I mean literally—and I look down. Let me see if I can zoom in here a little bit. There’s a bunch of money laying all around the side of the road. Thank you God.

That’s interesting. I want to be sure to relate this story accurately. If you look across the valley and I’ve just crossed, it’s about 25 miles or so that I’ve been riding. Now during that time I’ve been having this little conversation with God about provision and what is it that I need to do to take my service to the next level—you know, and it’s just basically serving more people. And I’m looking at my totem. It’s a reminder of God’s faithfulness and His provision and all of that. You notice right here: provision of work, finances. And uh that’s about the time I was getting pretty hot and decided to stop and uh take off my jersey and in the process looking down I find $118.

I can’t say that I manifested the money and I certainly didn’t have an intention to find it, but you know I do have a real heart’s desire to serve people. And if this little story serves you then it’s a good one for me.

I’m like I said out here in early Utah. That’s an interesting one to think about—how provision shows up when you need it. I think this is worth recording just for the record.

Um we just finished with a really excellent meeting with Purple Heart organization and Patrick was very receptive, very entrepreneurial and wanting to help wounded veterans. And with Scotomaville we then needed to go put some gas in the car but we’re just leaving after having put five dollars into the gas tank because I couldn’t fill it all the way up. And I’m thinking okay fine, how many miles does that get us and we have about an hour drive tomorrow to go look at some property and I’m thinking through huh how we’re gonna make this happen, getting there and getting back. And not even four minutes later after putting in that five dollars I get a text message on my phone for one of the persons that’s saying I’m trying to pay to be part of your project and I want to do a two-payment option and it’s not allowing me to and I’m like I’ll send you a Venmo right now.

William H. Murray was totally correct and Scripture supports the same idea: when you’re fully committed and not until then. And you know it just makes me um appreciate as a couple how we navigate through the adventures together. And thank you Elon for sharing your transparency and how you not just sleep on the factory floor to show your team your commitment—you’re fully committed in being there—but that you too have sacrificed what is required for the greater good of all. So we are following in the way in which he and others have led and that’s just part of the journey to get comfortable with being uncomfortable sometimes.

Leo Tolstoy is a famous Russian novelist and I love this quote of his because it agrees with Einstein that it seems that the smarter we think we are they actually the blinder we get. “I know that most men, not only those considered clever but even those who are very clever and capable of understanding most difficult scientific, mathematical or philosophic problems, can seldom discern even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as obliges them to admit the falsity of conclusions they have formed, perhaps with much difficulty—conclusions of which they are proud, which they have taught to others and on which they have built their life.”

You’ve seen North American Indian petroglyphs and possibly Egyptian hieroglyphics. Here’s a good example of that. This happens to be one of those examples of a psychological scotoma that I really love. I’ve used this in hundreds of presentations and so much so that it’s like it’s on some of our company t-shirts right.

I jokingly refer to entrepreneurs as the AAA—for serial entrepreneurs. And it may take you a level two series which is to cycle with me across North America or to hike with Mark Barnes and I and canoe across all of Brazil. There’ll be something next summer in 2011 that we’re going to be doing as a band of men. When you go through this series you’re going to have to do this with a sketchbook or your own journal to track your progress. And as you’ll see I’ve got numerous journals that I keep notes in, keep drawings in, keep all of the progress that I have has been going through. And it’s partly to explain to my kids…

Welcome back to chapter one of the Enterprising Cycle and this is session four on perceptual illusions. Hi I’m Jerry Andrus. I’m very interested in how our human brains work that I’m standing inside what I call “Boxing Possible.” If you’ll look maybe you’ll see that there seems to be something wrong with it. Here watch this—look it’s not a box at all. I was just standing in the corner of this framework and you can see it has no resemblance to a box at all.

Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle chapter two part three on brain plasticity. Now you remember that I said the Enterprising Cycle is decades of wisdom reduced to invaluable hours. Now I have a background in particle physics and nuclear energy and this brain plasticity stuff—neither of us are going to become neuroscientists by looking into this session but we are going to see some pretty darn amazing evidence. You remember that uh old wives tale that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Well in fact you can and we’re going to learn from Jody Miller that who’s had a hemispherctomy—I mean literally has half a brain—that we can in fact learn all kinds of new stuff at any time we choose. We are created for change.

Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle chapter two session four on Arrested Development. I gotta tell you I not only earned the shirt I made the shirts. This was for a group of guys graduating from Dr. Paul Hagstrom’s course on life skills of which several of us are still in two years later. That’s what this session’s about. I’ve done a few expeditions—Transamerica rides—and uh I’m familiar with the staging process, the um getting ready to go process where you in my case you ride thousands of miles before you ride thousands of miles. Here’s the fourth summit of the day and man it’s dropped 15 degrees since this morning. It’s Memorial Day weekend and if you can see it but I’m in the middle of a bunch of snow flurries in Nevada.

Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle chapter two and part five on change thinking. Now this is going to be a bit funny because if it continues as it has been my natural lighting source is the Sun and today is a gnarly windy day in the gorge and we have a ribbon of clouds between my studio and the Sun and for the last hour it has been coming and going very frequently so I am really learning to deal with change as uh this conditions here in the set continually change. The neighbor comes asking for jumper cables, a train parks outside and idles waiting for another one so my plans for this morning are completely disrupted and that in fact is a pretty good uh personal testimony about where we’re going on this Personal Everest if you will about transformation.

Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle chapter two this is session six on distinction and emotional vocabulary and I gotta tell you that I think you’re doing really well. You are ascending and acclimating. You’re becoming more familiar with a lot of the terms and the diversity of the concepts that I’m bringing together for you. And in this session we’re going to start off by kind of a review—you know back down to Base Camp a little bit. And what we should have picked up is that it’s critical to surround yourself with lifelong learning with books and mentors for us to model and to mimic, to surround ourselves with points of view that we won’t naturally have at a time when it’s critical for us to get it. One of my favorite and most respected authors puts it this way: don’t get worried or upset about anything but in every situation pray with thanksgiving presenting your requests to God and the peace of God which goes beyond common understanding will protect and renew your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus. Summing it all up I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things that are true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best not the worst, beautiful not the ugly, things to praise not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that and God who makes everything work together will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

It’s fairly easy to mix up the idea that because something complex has been reduced to simple terms and as Paul eloquently writes the instructions on how to actually change your mind that not only would it be simple but it would be easy. And therein lies our challenge because yes it is simple but for some reason it is not at all easy. It’s fraught with fear and doubt and the emotions which say that I can’t, I won’t, I couldn’t and just shutting down, just straight up turning off. So let me share with you some of the tools that I know over time do actually work. They make it so you don’t have to go in on your own. You don’t have to learn trial by error. You can in fact practice with others and arrive safely at the destination on the other side of the crevasse if you will as a completely transformed person.

Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle chapter two on personal transformation. This is session eight which is the wrap up for the chapter. Now the goal of this entire chapter is not for you to learn how to offend people or put them on the offensive—what he means is defensive—but rather for you to become more transparent and far less guarded, to have the capacity of understanding in your mind to deal with changes in the market so that you don’t have to become an offender using your strengths to wound other people.

It’s really stinky in a helmet face mask. Oh yeah.

**Daniel & Angelina (archival 2011):**
Hi I’m Daniel Comp founder of Entrepreneurs and author of The Enterprising Cycle. Hi I’m Angelina Musik founder of Entrepreneurs and also author of The Enterprise. And we are at the starting point of the 2011 Transamerica Expedition. We are in Blaine Washington which is overlooking the Canadian Vancouver border. To invite you on this year’s Expedition. First let me explain: an expedition is a journey with a purpose and a destination.

On this card on one side put a big fat plus. On the other side about the size of a peppercorn—smaller than a ladybug—draw a dot like that. Hang on are you driving your car? Put that phone down. You can’t watch this and do this exercise. We all have a scotoma. That’s a blind spot. That’s an area that we have with us our entire life.

You ever wonder why they have pilots scan the horizon right to look around like this? Because if you can’t see an incoming spot—an airplane or a missile—if there’s a pilot in the other vehicle they can’t see you either. Can’t just be fully engaged all the time and hope things turn out. That’s like living underneath a bluff with rocks up there. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Next time you go to get your coffee make sure you get the right size sleep because they have small and they have large right? Don’t get them mixed up.

You got the right idea. Oh yeah. This is episode and welcome to absolutely nowhere. They pronounce it now here. It’s now here now here. Correct it’s now here now here. Really? It says nowhere. It’s now here. It’s now here not nowhere. Really they pronounce it now here. Oh I get it. The traffic is now here. The noise is now here. Yeah this is now here not nowhere. I got it. Imagine riding your bike across this and then having this pass you. Oh yeah there’s a trigger. Here’s some more and then another one and then it would all go away and there’d be nobody and it’d be all back to you again on the side of the road nice and quiet.

We’re in a public library. It’s a great place to learn about curves and exponentials and how to use information and storytelling to change lanes.

I hope you can see my camera in here. If not I’m gonna look. I’ve stuck it up on this sort of thing right so you can see how I’m shooting what I’m shooting while I’m recording from my… so we’re going to put you back down here and hopefully that’s in about the right place.

The reason I’ve taken so many episodes to expand your understanding of scotomas, illusions, storytelling, being gamed: if you don’t want to be part of the useless class then don’t get suckered into being entertained and just being a data provider. Don’t just be adding data to the corpus for AI. Don’t even be… yeah good night’s sleep. Parsons cod liver oil before bed and uh a bit of diffuse time. You can come up with some pretty interesting large idea mapping in contrast to focus mode. You get these really good conceptual ideas on things like this one. Hey Stephen why don’t you show me that Maslow’s hierarchy again. Certainly let me escape this event horizon and I’d be keen to explain it Daniel. It’s now here. Yeah I remember. Oh yeah there’s a trigger. Absolutely no fear right? No fear. We’re just pushing through. I said it is now here. The fair week what? Correct. No fear. No that’s not what you said. You said no fear. You have to know fair to talk about it. No I’m not doing it. Not the whole week. No fear. No fear. No fear. That’s not what you said. Okay I’ll tell it then. Here’s a true story. Back in the day I did 9/11 and I used to spend a lot of time on the track with buddies of mine. One of them from side to side across the rear window was a sticker and the sticker was spelled K-N-O-W-F-E-A-R. I just had the most impossible time getting past this guy and literally he taught me fear in these turns. But that’s not the kind of fear I’m talking about. I’m talking about having your amygdala hijacked—your entire system. That’s the kind of fear I’m talking about when it’s not in your hands and you have to let something else determine the outcome. Oh that’s the pedicure I’m talking about.

Okay.

I keep talking about the 360 Men book of insights as an expedition and we’re all going to put some crampons on. We’re all going to acclimate. We’re going to go up and down up and down up and down. That means a bunch of failures. That means a bunch of exercise and work and exchanging ideas and sweat—you know a lot of uh things. But what you’re going to learn, the experience you’re going to gain, the abilities that you’ll have after a little bit of exercise are going to really help you communicate some important things. So right now I am giving you an example of part of what you’re going to learn. I have up here a little GoPro Redbox. I have here my tablet sitting on my desk and you can see that I’m shooting from that. I have here my cell phone handheld. You could stick stuff in you know a window mount. You could put it on a tripod.

Weather front had just gone through and it was cold that morning and wet and so I went to in Fargo North Dakota I went to McDonald’s and as I went in I looked around it was full of senior citizens. I mean there was no place to sit except at a table with an Indian. I got my meal being delivered to me at the counter and I heard this “hey I need to talk to you.” I was like oh people are looking at me. I turn around and it’s a gentleman sitting at the table pointing at me. “I need to talk to you” he said. So I thought well okay it’s interesting. I went and sat down at the table and we started eating a meal and I go why do you have to wait what’s all that stuff? I’m looking at all this. It looks like a Walmart greeter. It’s got a hat on. It’s got sure it’s got all kinds of pins and medallions and ribbons and stuff and I go wait a minute you’re not a Walmart. Those are all battle um medallions and all campaigns. And I was like who are you? And he says I’m uh Glenn Douglas and we dug into the story a little bit. You might know the movie with Nicholas Cage in it called Wind Talkers and Glenn was one of the original windtalkers from the Korean War. He’s the oldest living most decorated Army Native American Army intelligence officer.

Music I had some interesting life experiences so in the middle of conversation I oh he I said why do you have to talk to me and he laid the paper down in the newspaper he was reading and he pointed to a picture of me. “Is that you?” And I was like yeah but is that you? On the opposite side of the paper was his face. Well here we are he’s reading the newspapers both of us that I’m standing at the counter and so we get to have a conversation with each other and he wanted to know what I’m doing so I shared a little bit unpelling across America uh Angelina being in a car wreck and I was trying to get the message out. And on the same day Lance Armstrong rode into Paris for the final time a cyclist from Seattle rode into the Twin Cities for the first time. Daniel Comp is traveling cross-country on his bike to raise awareness for women in business. The longtime cyclist got the idea after his wife was injured in a bad car crash. Car crash she was an entrepreneur and he’s riding in honor of her through peer support and mentoring they all sort of network together and share their business ideas and help each other in business and just incredible things are coming out of it so we’re trying to bring it out of the Texas South area and up across the northern U.S. So Comp started his journey in Seattle just after Father’s Day. He figures if he travels 80 to 100 miles a day he’ll reach the East Coast by the end of August. I said oh go ahead you’re you’re an Indian and I still remember this I get goosebumps from this because it was like the most obvious inappropriate social statement to make out loud right. You were an Indian and uh yeah and I said what’s with the butterflies? He goes oh butterflies they know. I’m like they know. They know what? Your mission. My mission what? You’re changing and you’re helping people. The butterflies are there so you don’t quit and the horses too.

It’s fascinating not just to see the weight gain and reduction but to understand the internal dialogue that I can still hear. So in the span of 30 years I learned little pieces of video production and storytelling and I want to encourage you the learning curve but the frustration because now the value to me is not only to look back at cameras doing this. The value for you to put out the effort over time—the why if you will—is that you’ll be able to look back, understand a bigger pattern within the span of your lifetime. You’ll be able to pass on insights and wisdom to your family, your friends, your community, help them take grander steps. And I want you to just take a bit of time to actually think about 30 years, 40, 50 years from now looking back how satisfied you will be for having put in that small amount of effort incrementally to both record and to tell that story. And I think from that why you’ll find the ability to climb again and again and again. And then over time to find not just your voice in your style to be honest with what the actual story is. So boring that you pass on. Can we turn on the television? I think that’s what this episode… let’s check your social media. Helping you get the heck out of Scotomaville though. Find your why. Find a way.
