**Daniel:**
Hello, I’m Daniel Comp. I’m the author and curator of the Scotomaville series.

Gonna get the series out of Scotomaville. Scotoma is a blind spot. People who reside in Scotomaville — they don’t even know they’ve got blind spots, scotomas.

In this clip I’d like to introduce the abstract of Scotomaville — the thesis statement. And that’s already a bit much. If you go ask Google, as we are here, they have about 227 million answers for the simple question of “define a thesis abstract.”

But in essence, the aim is to tell people here’s the broad view of what and why and how. The reality is very few people will have or take the time, and most people will jump to the methods and call that good. So let’s jump into this.

We’re currently filming, traveling across the country on a Good Grief Tour from an Airstream. And this is the abstract page — well, it’s the home page, it’s the abstract section. This is Angelina. This is the cover of the book. And you can get all this again on the home page of the website.

So the background: Woodwind. Okay, what does that mean? Most people respond to chaos and stress with coping mechanisms, amygdala hijackings, and reactive behavior. For some of us, curiosity dominates and we want to know why we do what we do. And some of us are committed to exploring the unknown — in other words, to “know thyself.”

I’ve actually bicycled across America three times asking just that. If you’d like a little more description you can drill down for more about being hoodwinked and bamboozled. But let’s move on to the method.

It’s impartation. What does that mean? Well, the Scotomaville program embodies the community development model: I do, you watch. It’s 30 episodes. It’s 30 chapters. I’m actually the guinea pig. Now then it’s a platform where we can work through that together: we do, we watch. And then it’s a licensed satellite or platform for these certified leaders where you do and I watch — to plant, nurture, and scale a personal transformation process. Again, you can drill down into the details.

What did I find after three years of working on this? Self-gaming is critical. By climbing a personal Everest and testing for oneself the claims of W.H. Murray, a mountaineer, and Angelina and I, the authors — that personal expeditions are filled with unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no one would have dreamt would come their way. Participating explorers can develop clarity, stability, healing, and successes by gaming their own biases.

You see, we have 188 cognitive biases. If you learn what they are, you not only become aware but you understand how they operate. You can drill down into this. Then you can become your own target to work with your own systems.

And so the conclusion is: We believe the greatest expedition you will ever undertake is the journey to self-understanding.

And here in the conclusion: A personal Everest is a journey with a purpose. An expedition is literally defined as a journey with a purpose. So if you set out on an expedition with an aim in mind and you’re cognitively biased and you’re gaming yourself… here’s what Blaise Pascal said in his Pascal’s Wager:

“But at least learn your inability and ask the remedy for it. Learn of those who have been bound like you — these are people who know the way which you would follow and who are cured of an ill which you would be cured. And this is the critical part: follow the way by which they began.” Not “do what I did” precisely, just up the hill on a personal Everest, on an expedition, a journey with a purpose.

And that is what Scotomaville is about. It’s about the greatest expedition you will ever undertake being the journey to self-understanding and getting the heck out of Scotomaville.

I’m Daniel Comp and in the next clip I’ll introduce the facets of the book.
