summary: "In the inaugural video of the Scotomaville series, Daniel introduces the core concept of 'scotoma' — the physiological blind spot in human vision caused by the optic nerve — and demonstrates it live with a simple 3x5 card exercise. He immediately bridges the physical reality to psychological and cognitive scotomas (cognitive biases, arrested development, limiting beliefs, walled gardens) that distort how we perceive the world, especially amid the fear and loss of the early 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. This foundational episode frames self-awareness as the essential first step on a personal 'Everest' expedition out of ignorance toward fulfillment and a better destiny for self and family."
keypoints:
  - "A scotoma is a natural blind spot in the field of vision where the optic nerve exits the retina; we literally do not see everything right in front of us."
  - "We don't see things the way they are. We see things the way we are."
  - "Psychological scotomas include cognitive bias, arrested development, walled gardens, and beliefs that are simply not true."
  - "Self-awareness begins with acknowledging our blind spots and is the indispensable starting point of a long, challenging, but rewarding personal journey."
  - "Leaving Scotomaville is not instantaneous; it is a deliberate expedition with mileposts and tools that can be recalled exactly when needed."

### Original YouTube Description
What the heck is a SCOTOMA? The street term is a 'blind-spot'. It's a small portion of our field of view that is missing. It's caused by the absence of photo receptors within our eyes where the optic nerve bundles the information we are changing from light to electrical impulses in our brain. Huh? "We don't see things the way they are. We see things the way WE are" We're experiencing a global pandemic together. There are fabulous stories of human ingenuity, compassion, sacrifice and wonderful solutions being invented. Unfortunately millions of people don't see things this way. Frustration, fear, rage, anxiety and even suicide are the norm for many people. It doesn't have to be this way for you. Going from ignorance and a lack of self-awareness to fulfillment and happiness is an expedition. It's a journey with a purpose. It's a personal Everest that starts with a choice. Get out a pen and a 3x5 card or a piece of paper. Follow along and you'll take the first step out of Scotomaville. Share your experience, thoughts and questions. There's a fabulous road ahead. Let's go together.

### Cleaned Transcript
**Daniel:**
Why did I want to write *Leaving Scotomaville*? Besides the fact of our current events in history providing you with all of the onus privata, all the evidence that you need that people in general are freaked out, contrary to the actual evidence. And yeah, the evidence is pretty steep.

**Daniel:**
Horrible. Potentially a quarter million people will lose their life from COVID-19, and this is the first of April. But almost that number are expected to commit suicide because they've lost hope, they've lost perspective, they've lost their sense of way. They don't know what's going on inside of here and here, and they don't know how to fix their gut and how to listen to the core.

**Daniel:**
Why did I want to write it? Because I found my way. Three Trans-Americas, 30-plus — how many? — 46 years as an entrepreneur. I've done and experienced a lot of life — eight world records. I've done a lot of things. The hardest and the most rewarding was that personal Everest, that expedition to self-awareness.

**Daniel:**
Holy cow. Why did I want to write *Leaving Scotomaville*? Because I found a few mileposts and I found a way to put a few markers down, and I hope that that's going to be sufficient to both interest and hold your attention and help you recall the tools at the time you need them — to make progress in the time you have, for the sake of those around you: your family, your friends, your peers.

**Daniel:**
Yeah, that's why I wrote it. We're gonna start laughing after a while, but one of the absolutely essential tools in leaving Scotomaville... let's go take a walk. Time out — we're taking the trash out.

**Daniel:**
You're gonna find over time that this is some of the most wonderful diffuse time, when you get to think about stuff, do things in your mind. You learn how to dump the trash without touching anything. Yeah.

**Daniel:**
Self-awareness is a good thing.

**Daniel:**
Welcome to Scotomaville. I'm really excited for you. I have had to stumble and fumble and find my way in the dark. I've learned from some really cool people for decades — a long list of mentors. Most of them have passed away, but their words live on.

**Daniel:**
And so why am I writing *Scotomaville*? Because I wanted to pass on to you some of the essential things I have found in getting to a state of fulfillment — leaving my blind spots, leaving my lack of awareness behind me.

**Daniel:**
And in this very first episode, I'm gonna define scotoma. Well, it's already a term, it's defined, and I'm just gonna pass that on to you. You already know it but you don't. A scotoma is an area in the field of our vision — right in the area that we look — that we don't literally see what's there.

**Daniel:**
I'm gonna quote this a lot: "We don't see things the way they are. We see things the way we are." And there's some things missing in our awareness, and I'm gonna prove that to you.

**Daniel:**
Over the next series of lessons, I'm gonna give you tools to empower you to build your self-awareness, which will change your belief system, and that'll affect your habits, and eventually you'll change lanes and the destiny of yourself and your family.

**Daniel:**
We're in the information era. You don't have the requirement of having inherited land or an industry or even to have been born in a particular class. You see, information can set you free.

**Daniel:**
So a scotoma is the very first thing I want you to understand. It's the starting point of awareness — and that is, we don't even see things the way they are. I'm gonna prove it to you.

**Daniel:**
I want you to get an index card or a piece of paper. Fold it into little pieces, but an index card will work. What I want you to do is draw a plus on one side and any dot on the other. Draw this about the size of a ladybug.

**Daniel:**
Now here goes the exercise. I'm gonna prove to you that you don't see things the way they are. You think you do. You believe you understand the way the world is. Not so. Here's what you need to do: Put this plus in front of this eye, close the other eye, and move this card out about 12 to 16 inches. Fixate — stare straight at the plus with the open eye — and move this card away slowly.

**Daniel:**
Right there... literally, I cannot see the dot. The dot is gone. Yep, right there — gone. I see it. I don't see it. Okay. This dot will disappear off the page when you're staring at the plus. That's called a scotoma — a blind spot. And you can do it in both eyes.

**Daniel:**
Cover this eye. Fixate right here. Put it right in front of this. Fixate on this. I mean close this one. Fixate on the other. Move it out right there — twelve inches or so. And you can see in your peripheral vision until there's a range... boom! I do not see it.

**Daniel:**
I can see the plants around it. I can see the lake. I can see my hand. I see the card. I see this dot — I mean the plus — and that... wherever it is... this right here is gone. Yeah, crazy.

**Daniel:**
Try it. I'll wait for you. Get your card.

**Daniel:**
Okay, I got you. I don't see a dot. Big deal. It's just a dot. What's it matter? Who cares?

**Daniel:**
Let me tell you: that's just the beginning. That's just the starting point. That's a physical scotoma. That's just a little blind spot that all mammals have.

**Daniel:**
We also share psychological scotomas. We all have cognitive bias. We all have arrested development. We all have walled gardens. We all have beliefs that are not true. You'll hear me say this a lot: I'm a hundred percent wrong fifty percent of the time.

**Daniel:**
Becoming aware is the very first step of a long journey — a very challenging but a very, very rewarding journey. It's a personal Everest, and things are gonna get thin up there and you don't want to take crap all the way because you don't need to carry it all the way. It's stuff that's not doing you well — it's beliefs, attitudes, behaviors that you can change. And we're gonna get into all of that.

**Daniel:**
But for now, just remember: We don't see things the way they are. We see things the way we are.

**Daniel:**
I'd like you to see that this is a journey. It's not that you get there instantly.

**Daniel:**
I've come to an Amazon locker and because I've been cleaning my hands so much, touch screens don't work on my fingers anymore. But guess what works? And it was like, wait a minute — you could stick these into a bottle of alcohol and clean these super easy. You can stick them in your pocket. You can activate almost anything you need to touch — like the terminals at the store. You don't have to be doing it with your fingers.

**File:** SCOTOMAVILLE - 01.01 Scotomas
**Monomyth Stage:** 01 - Ordinary World
**Gameboard Position:** Camp -4: The Ordinary World
**MA5 Domain:** Initium

**Summary:**
In the very first Scotomaville video, Daniel introduces the core concept of "scotoma" — the natural blind spot in human vision — using a simple 3x5 card demonstration. He bridges the physical phenomenon to the far more consequential psychological, cognitive, and belief-based blind spots that keep people trapped in frustration, fear, and unfulfillment.

**Key Insight:**
"We don't see things the way they are. We see things the way we are." Becoming aware of our scotomas is the essential first step on the personal Everest of self-awareness.

**Narrative Significance:**
This video marks the official launch of the Scotomaville journey and the entire body of work that would grow into books, a trilogy, and the foundation of the Initium framework. It establishes the central problem (unseen blind spots) and the promised path (deliberate self-awareness) that would guide thousands away from suffering toward fulfillment. The first marker on the trail out of Scotomaville.
