summary: "Daniel Comp delivers the final session of Chapter 2 on Affirmations and Gratitude as the practical 'handle' for personal transformation. He reviews all the tools from the series (small business is personal, scotomas, brain plasticity, emotional vocabulary, distinction, arrested development) and shares his raw story of self-sabotage, bankruptcy, and a decade in an 'emotional cave' after a failed lawsuit against a $16 billion company. He demonstrates the power of state of mind with a comparison of positive affirmations (young girl Jessica) versus negative self-talk and recommends Denise Lynch's hypnotherapy CDs for daily practice. The session emphasizes that consistent affirmations, gratitude, tracking negative self-talk, and accountability rewire the brain and lead to real character maturity. Daniel challenges men to join an expedition, turn their challenges into championships, and commit to the lifelong process of transformation."
keypoints:
  - "Small business is personal — 71% of U.S. businesses (21 million) are solo operators whose emotional state directly determines success or self-sabotage"

notes: "This final session of Chapter 2 provides the practical application and daily tools for all the awareness and neuroscience taught previously. Daniel's personal story of bankruptcy and recovery makes the material deeply credible. The recommendation of Denise Lynch's CDs and the Jessica affirmation comparison are highly actionable. The tone is encouraging yet challenging, ending with a clear call to join an expedition of men. No AI avatars; pure founder teaching and testimony."

**Daniel:**
Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle. This is Chapter Two, Session Seven on **Affirmations and Gratitude**.

So let's go back down to base camp, rummage through our tool bag, see what some of the things we've put together so far are so we can kind of start synthesizing all of this into some meaning, which leads us to an actual application of all these tools.

One of the tools I really like is the idea that **small business is personal**. You remember it's one half of all the businesses in the United States are men working with zero employees. Add that to six and a half million women, and what you get is 71% or 21 million men and women working alone. That's a really big tool to have.

Next, **blind spots and emotional scotomas**. We blank out. We, as Paul Hegstrom says, we don't see things the way they are. We see things the way we are.

Another big tool, hey, **don't go it alone**. You can't just figure it all out on your own. So the myth of the West, the Marlboro Man, the going it solo off over the horizon, hey, doesn't cut it in entrepreneuring. And if you look into all the statistics and businesses that have really succeeded across the globe, you'll find that literally none of the top companies were started by a solo entrepreneur.

What did we learn from Phantom Limb?

**V.S. Ramachandran (clip):**
When the arm was intact but paralyzed, the brain sends commands to the arm, the front of the brain saying move, but it's getting visual feedback saying no. Move, no, move, no, move, no. And this gets wired into the circuitry of the brain and we call this learned paralysis.

**Daniel:**
Okay, the brain.

How about **mirroring, modeling, mentoring** — all of those pieces that go together that say our brain learns by mimic, right? Hegstrom says that our brain was created for surrogacy.

So we have with us this plasticity with which we can work to transform our beliefs, attitudes and behaviors, which ultimately can lead to our success or to our devastation.

Yeah, here's a good one. **The mind creates the brain.** It's the ability to focus our attention on intention, which helps us by gaining distinction, especially on emotional vocabularies that we're able to literally build the fabric of our brain, even recover from decades of substance abuse, including personal self-talk abuse. Or in my case, maternal stressors like cortisol that predisposes or change the trajectory of our psychological wellbeing.

We can actually build these bridges across the chasm with some of these tools.

And now in this session, we're gonna talk specifically about how **affirmations and gratitude** do exactly that.

You'll recall that my X-factor had to do with discovering that just having the tools and understanding and managing your roles was not enough. The significance of my X-factor insight was in the distinction between the mind and the brain.

Do you see that we've been talking about be transformed by the renewing of your brain? No, by the renewing of your mind.

So there it is, the little catch-22. If you can't distinguish between the two, then it's impossible to change either of them because you feel that you're the victim of circumstance, of tragedy, of whatever it would be.

20 years ago, I was literally ready to retire financially when I had a product defect and I decided to sue the parent company, a $16 billion a year provider. And four years in court, they just flat wore me out because I couldn't pay the $7,000 a month to keep the trial going. So they got out of the responsibility.

I went away licking my wounds emotionally whooped. Basically, I self-sabotaged my family, my career, everything vaporized with what seemed overnight. I went into an emotional cave for a decade after bankruptcy and those different pieces told me that I was a failure.

When in fact, the only thing that failed was my attitude.

So we're gonna have a look at a couple of different clips here to help you discern how attitude affects our emotions and our state.

First, a little YouTube celebrity called Jessica wants you to pay attention to your emotions. See if you can really write down some key words about what's going on when you listen to her daily affirmations.

**[Jessica positive affirmations clip]**

**Jessica:**
Now, my whole house is great. I can do anything good. I like my school. I like anything. I like my dad. I like my cousins. I like my aunts. I like my Alice's. I like my mom. I like my sisters. I like my dad. I like my hair. I like my hair. I like my haircuts. I like my pajamas. I like my stuff. I like my rooms. I like my whole house. My whole house is great. I can do anything good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I can do anything good, better than anyone, better than anyone.

**Daniel:**
And now, for a parody of Jessica, do the same thing. Write down your emotions that you experience with this attitude.

**[Negative parody clip]**

**Parody Voice:**
Now, my whole life is crap. I can't do anything good. I hate my work. I hate my life. I hate my dad's. I hate my hair. I hate my haircuts. I hate my whole everything. I hate my sisters. I hate my Allison's. I hate my stuff. I hate my pajamas. I hate my rooms. I hate my apartment. My whole house is crap. I can't do anything good. No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm better than nobody.

**Daniel:**
Aside from the distracting underwear, I'm sure you came out with an interesting list that if you compare the two, Jessica versus the parody, you'll find there's a significant difference. That state of mind directly affects the brain.

One of my favorite and most respected authors puts it this way:

"Don't get worried or upset about anything, but in every situation, pray with thanksgiving, presenting your requests to God. And the peace of God, which goes beyond common understanding, will protect and renew your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.

Summing it all up, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things that are true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious. The best, not the worst. The beautiful, not the ugly. Things to praise, not things to curse.

Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God who makes everything work together will work you into his most excellent harmonies."

It's fairly easy to mix up the idea that because something complex has been reduced to simple terms, and as Paul eloquently writes, the instructions on how to actually change your mind, that not only would it be simple, but it would be easy.

And therein lies our challenge because yes, it is simple, but for some reason, it is not at all easy. It's fraught with fear and doubt and the emotions, which say that I can't, I won't, I couldn't. And just shutting down, just straight up turning off.

So let me share with you some of the tools that I know over time do actually work. They make it so you don't have to go in on your own. You don't have to learn trial by error. You can in fact practice with others and arrive safely at the destination on the other side of the crevasse, if you will, as a completely transformed person.

I found an excellent tool for cutting through decades of deprecating self-talk. **Denise Lynch**, certified hypnotherapist. She has an 8 CD set that will teach and lead you through the process of self-awareness and affirmation development. You can put it on your favorite device and listen to it all throughout the day.

Here's a sample with some Maui whale watching footage we shot.

**Denise Lynch (affirmations):**
The following are affirmations designed to counter negative thinking. Sit back, breathe deeply. Allow yourself to absorb the following thoughts. Allow yourself in your own mind to repeat the following thoughts.

(gentle music)

More every day. I recognize that I am worthy of my dreams and I always have been.

More every day. I release myself from the rigid confines of self judgment and instead support and encourage myself.

More every day. I forgive myself for not always having the answers and acknowledge myself for trying so hard.

I now free myself to respond to others rather than react.

More every day. I can imagine what the best possible outcome of any situation is.

I am becoming a positive encouraging voice in the lives of those around me.

I am now the positive encouraging voice in my own life.

It feels good to relax, to release others from unrealistic expectations and instead send them some approval.

More every day. I feel in gratitude for the opportunity to live my life.

More every day. I hear the positive voices around me and I remain unaffected by the negative ones.

(gentle music)

I honor and respect myself for all I have been through.

**Daniel:**
I've used Denise's material along with my own self accountability checking my negative self talk for almost a decade and then compare that to the number of affirmations that I do and you see that over time it actually changes quite a bit.

You start realizing that over time these memories that you have from the arrested development in your childhood start to sputter out. They start being all resolved with these affirmations.

So the false conclusions go away and by developing a list of "I am growing and healthy, I am loving, caring, understanding, respecting, appreciating, accepting, trusting," you can keep your own scorecard, whatever your wife would love you to be able to develop can be done.

Now I've noticed that the discipline to practice falls off and in other words it's easier and the affirmations become stronger as you develop an emotional vocabulary so that that's real character maturity developing.

So in wrapping up this session, I'd really like to challenge you to attack personal transformation head on. Be a part of an expedition with other enterprising men of valor. Learn to turn your challenges into championships. Become accountable for your own self talk and practice, practice, practice.

It really works.

What's next is the poll and the essay question.

Well done.

**Summary:** Daniel Comp delivers the final session of Chapter 2, synthesizing all previous tools into the practical daily practice of affirmations and gratitude. He shares his raw personal story of self-sabotage, bankruptcy, and a decade in an emotional cave after losing a lawsuit against a $16 billion company, then demonstrates how consistent affirmations (using Denise Lynch's CDs) and tracking negative self-talk rewired his brain and restored his family and business. The session contrasts positive affirmations (young girl Jessica) with negative self-talk to show the direct power of state of mind, and closes with a clear challenge to join an expedition of men, turn challenges into championships, and commit to lifelong practice.
**Key Insight:** Affirmations and gratitude are not fluffy self-help — they are the practical handle that turns awareness, neuroscience, and emotional vocabulary into daily brain rewiring and real character maturity.
**Narrative Significance:** This is the completion of Chapter 2 and the practical capstone of the Level One Series. It moves men from intellectual understanding to daily action, providing the final "elixir" — the repeatable practice of affirmations, gratitude, and accountability that sustains transformation long after the course ends. The personal testimony and Denise Lynch recommendation make this one of the most actionable sessions in the entire series.
