summary: "Daniel Comp delivers one of the most raw and personally revealing sessions in the entire series on Arrested Development, featuring extensive teaching from Dr. Paul Hegstrom of Life Skills. He and Angelina share their painful story of separation, reconciliation, and core transformation after years of dysfunction, domestic violence recovery, TBI, and repeated business failures. Hegstrom explains how childhood wounds create false belief systems, arrested emotional development, denial, authority issues, and distorted perception ('we see things the way we are, not the way they are'). The session emphasizes that the brain can be rewired through becoming teachable, group accountability, truth, and the 36-month process of healing. Daniel positions this material as the 'Hillary Step' of personal transformation — the hardest but most rewarding part of the journey."
keypoints:
  - "Arrested development locks emotions in childhood states, causing adults to react with rage, denial, authority issues, and distorted perception that destroys relationships and businesses"
  - "Childhood wounds create false belief systems that make us see reality through the lens of our pain rather than truth ('we see things the way we are, not the way they are')"
  - "Dr. Paul Hegstrom teaches that the brain can be rewired through becoming teachable, surrogate parenting in safe groups, and replacing false beliefs with truth over approximately 36 months"
  - "Daniel and Angelina's personal testimony: After separation and years of dysfunction, they chose core transformation through Life Skills and now hold each other accountable daily as best friends and business partners"
  - "Those who need this material most will often blank out or shut down — a protective mechanism that must be overcome in a safe, accountable group of men"
  - "Small business is deeply personal because unresolved childhood wounds sabotage decision-making, leadership, and the ability to build healthy teams"

notes: "This is one of the most emotionally intense and personally vulnerable sessions in the 19-video series. Daniel and Angelina share their real story of separation and reconciliation while featuring powerful teaching from Dr. Paul Hegstrom. The tone is raw, honest, and deeply encouraging. The 'Hillary Step' metaphor and the warning about blanking out are especially powerful for the target audience of men who need this material most. No AI avatars; pure founder and guest testimony."

**Daniel:**
Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle, Chapter Two, Session Four on **Arrested Development**.

I gotta tell you, I not only earned the shirt, I made the shirts. This was for a group of guys graduating from Dr. Paul Hegstrom's course on Life Skills, of which several of us are still in two years later.

That's what this session's about.

I've done a few expeditions, Transamerica rides, and I'm familiar with this staging process, the getting ready to go process, where in my case, you ride thousands of miles before you ride thousands of miles.

Here's the fourth summit of the day, and it's dropped 15 degrees since this morning. It's Memorial Day weekend, and I don't know if you can see it, but I'm in the middle of a bunch of snow flurries in the Nevada desert.

Got about a four-mile hill climb I've just finished. And boy, let me tell you, interesting experience with the sun out on the front side, your core temperature comes right up as soon as you start pedaling, so you gotta strip all your layers off. But on the shadow side, your skin is burning because of the wicking effect. So you got like this duality going on. You're burning on the front side, you're freezing and burning on the backside, and the whole time you're thinking, whoa, can't wait till I get to the top, I can get dressed again, so that I can go down the other side and freeze.

And there are times when you have to be realistic, gonna take a break, eat some food, take care of myself. Okay, time for some fluids and get going down the other side.

Personal transformation is a process very similar to a pretty decent expedition.

Imagine how scary this actually is. You fork out $45,000 minimum to have the opportunity to risk your life so that you can know what's inside of you.

Besides the obvious risks of falling in a crevasse or freezing to death, a summit on Everest is filled with the dangers of high altitude sickness. The ice flow's constantly moving and it's very easy to lose your bearings. It's really easy to get disoriented, confused, not knowing what's next. It's especially terrifying when you're injured or alone.

See, your brain swells and what happens is that you think you're thinking clearly. There's a major scotoma that goes on in that you're not really aware that you're slowly dying. You're freezing to death. Your brain is swelling inside your skull and eventually you simply get dizzy and collapse, freeze to death and are left on the hill.

There's over 200 bodies of absolutely phenomenal men that have died and women that have died on the summit and their bodies are still up there in many cases.

As we go up in altitude, the air gets thinner and we need time for our bodies to acclimate to the lack of oxygen by building red blood cells so we can fight our exposure to the cold and the stress which is producing flu-like symptoms.

We can usually out-climb our ability to acclimate so that means we climb high, sleep low. We go up three steps, take two steps back. We return to camps and lower down to give ourselves the ability to fight off high altitude pulmonary or cerebral edema which is usually pretty fatal.

And looking down this, yeah, that's about how far I fell. Ow.

One of the biggest lessons of the mountain: you never go it alone. You always rely on a buddy system and that's what we've got going on in MENtrepreneurs.

You don't do Arrested Development Recovery on your own. You gotta be part of a small group. You gotta be part of a group of men that you can mimic and follow.

I want you to know that just like the expeditions on Everest, I have been leading you stage by stage by stage, trying to acclimate your thinking so that you can understand you don't jump into the subject matter of Arrested Development.

You see, I know that our brain is gonna shut down and keep us from being able to address the areas that are critical for us in understanding that small business is personal.

So to get to personal transformation, we have to actually go in stages and that's what I've been doing with you so far.

So a little personal testimony from my wife and business partner, Angelina, about what she has seen happen with me.

**Angelina Mus-Comp:**
Hi, I'm Angelina.

Daniel and I met under the craziest circumstances. He was starting over, I was starting over. I was fleeing a domestic violence situation with two kids. We were living in a warehouse, eating out of an ice chest and showering with a hose, starting from ground zero together and with our company.

Then we invested about two years into a custody battle for my children while living at my dad's.

Alongside this, we moved forward with MOMtrepreneurs.

Throughout the hour, you've heard from a number of women who have followed their dreams, quit their corporate jobs and started their own businesses. Sometimes taking that leap is easier said than done unless you know what steps to take to turn your ideas into a reality.

Our next guest has been called the best kept secret for any woman wanting to start her own business. Angelina Mus-Comp is the owner of MOMtrepreneurs and helps women get their businesses off the ground.

If you can't say the word, I encourage people to say "Mom's tripping on manure." And then just say MOMtrepreneurs.

And we did incredible things. Through our TV show, our radio show, our online platform.

For the next few years, I struggled to heal with a severe head injury.

In the meantime, home life became pretty volatile, very challenging, and yeah, Daniel's in my face, just as you'll see an example of Hegstrom's video with John Ritter in it. It wasn't pretty, it was scary for myself and for my kids, and for Daniel. It was challenging.

He went on his first Transamerica ride looking for some answers. It was just good to have him out of the house, and then he went on his second ride, and then his third ride. Still not able to find answers.

Though I was healing, we still had challenges in our business and in our personal life.

We separated, and two years ago, we reconciled, and we made a decision to focus on transforming ourselves from our core. If we could transform ourselves from our core, then we knew that we could start healing and restoring our family and our business, and ourselves with each other as best friends like we were in the beginning.

And that's exactly what has happened. We've both gone through a transformational process, and we hold each other accountable, and consistently, every day, we are working each other through the buddy-buddy system. I call him on the carpet, he calls me on the carpet, and that buddy-buddy system is facilitating our transformation at even a quicker rate, so that we have a more harmonious relationship, we have a more thriving business, and it gives us the opportunity to speak to you from personal experience what we've gone through, what has worked, what hasn't worked, to save you time and money and heartache.

So with confidence, I say, it's okay to follow Daniel. He's gonna share with you transparently where he's screwed up and where he's overcome his challenges. He has gone through his personal Everest, and I'm really proud of him for stepping up and helping men do the same.

**Daniel:**
I saw something happening in my life that led me to the conclusion that small business is very personal, and that was sort of a self-sabotage. That was a meltdown of my business through circumstances that were thrust on me, bankruptcy, divorce, having to move into a warehouse, start over again with the dot-bomb, dot-com, my whole, that whole thing, and been in technology for the last 15 years.

There's a pattern referred to as the dance in psychology. It's the dance that you get into between you and your partner, your spouse, your wife.

And I noticed the same kind of pattern happening in the relationship I had with my boss.

You see, we started getting into periods of doubt and great confidence, followed by great success, great disaster, followed by I can do this, no, I can't, I'm gonna do it, no, I won't. The cycles can become devastating.

Let's have a look at this clip by the actor John Ritter, playing the part of Dr. Hegstrom.

**[John Ritter / Dr. Hegstrom clip]**

**John Ritter (as Dr. Hegstrom):**
You can do that later, sit down. Listen to me, listen to me. Next time, ask the receptionist what I'm doing. If I'm with a client, you can either call back or what? Leave a message. Sit down, go. Sorry. Okay, listen. Look, I know you don't have any personal experience of what it's like for me down at the office. You don't work, but you've gotta realize that that call you made cost me a sale. That's money out of our pockets. I'm the dealership's top salesman, they depend on me. So do you. I'm sorry. There, there it's good. Thanks. I'm so sorry. I know. Hi, are you hungry? I wasn't sure whether you were eating out or not, and if you haven't eaten, I can make you something. Shut up. What the hell good is all this? Dishwashing liquid, 35 cents off. Chicken pot pie, 75 cents off, two or more. Ooh, breakfast cereal, $1 free groceries with purchase. Hallelujah. No, no, gee, this is great. Look at all this money we're gonna save. Maybe we should use all this money and buy a big new house. Or a better idea, how about around the world cruise? How's that sound? Huh? It's just a few coupons. Then what's the point? You're telling me with all the free time I give you that you can't find a better way to benefit this family than by clipping a few lousy coupons. Don't turn away from me when I'm— Listen, listen. We are not through discussing your many invaluable contributions to this family's welfare. Do you hear what I'm saying? What do you do all day, huh? Look at this. What's this here? Can't you even keep a kitchen clean? It's your dinner, Paul, I'm sorry. Mom!

**Daniel:**
So now I'd like you to really focus, pay very good attention to what you're gonna hear from Dr. Paul Hegstrom.

**[Dr. Paul Hegstrom teaching clips]**

**Dr. Paul Hegstrom:**
So many people ask, why do I do what I do? And that's probably one of the greatest questions that does not have an answer in mental health... I spent a lot of money... with some of the top psychologist, psychiatrist... My big question with my psychiatrist was, why do I pick beautiful women in my life, and I destroy them?... And the only thing that got a hold of me was that six years that I was away from Judy... I got into pornography, drugs, alcohol, serial adultery... The only thing I didn't do was molest little children 'cause I had been molested as a child and I didn't want a child to ever have to deal with what I was dealing with... And I didn't even know what I was dealing with... I hit my crisis and had no answers... It took that big of a weapon to get me to change... I hit the wall and had no choice, it was either prison for 15 to 22 years or figure something out... If I can become teachable, it's all fixable... For lack of knowledge, my people perish... The wounds of childhood will affect us for a lifetime... All children, because they don't have the chemicals, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, they don't have the chemicals to see the whole picture. So everything that is not right in their life, every hurt, every wound, every loss, everything that happens to a child that doesn't feel good in the limbic system, the child says, "What's wrong with me that this happened to me?" So child 100% takes responsibility for all the hurts and pain and the losses in childhood... When we're wounded, we think everybody in our world has an agenda against us. We think everybody can see through us. And so we end up failing in areas. We have tremendous talents. We are gifted in things, but we never can take advantage of it because we feel that we're flawed and defective... I had a traumatic birth and almost died in a birth canal. And so my subconscious says my world's not safe. I was molested at three and a half. I was abandoned by my parents... I was raped at eight by an older man. At 13, I was molested for 13 months by a teacher in junior high school. So I had a lot of wounds. My behavior was whacked... I used to sit and think, I might as well be dead because I am so defective and so flawed, nothing is ever gonna happen good for me... Little children up to about three years of age... when they start to crawl, they'll crawl away for a little bit... and sit up on one hip and look back, see if mommy's still there... If a child has been rejected in that area... children will see going to a nursery school too early that that's abandonment... So that person grows up and marries, and say, let's use a man... He stalks his wife... because he's stuck back in that age bracket that if I can't see her, she doesn't exist... It's now not just mommy... I'm affected in all areas of my life because I'm stuck back at two, three years of age... So the rejection wound would cause things like, I don't open my bills if I don't have the money... I throw 'em in a drawer... Their unopened mail was somewhere in the area of four and a half foot tall, stacked... Because they could not stand to see what was going on because they felt helpless... Could not resolve conflict... We see that the wounds have to be dealt with if we're really gonna grow up and mature and be able to resolve conflicts... We have to resolve our own first... Too much of the time we marry someone we hope can resolve the conflicts... Then I lose my drive, sex drive for her because she's now fulfilling another role which she shouldn't fulfill... Fixation, the brain can never be emotionally restarted. But Life Skills has learned how to restart fixation and mature... We have, we go into the class and sometimes I'm the surrogate dad to 15 guys in a class because they do validation... He validated me for the first time in my life... My dad told me things I wanted to hear from my dad... So that's what Life Skills does. And so with that, we grow up... The mind needs these things to bring it to completion so we can move to another stage of development... And so that's what Life Skills does. And so with that, we grow up... And the more we grow up... that we give you what you need to know to be able to move to the next stage and develop character.

**Daniel:**
Well done. Amazing information.

If you've made it this far, you can congratulate yourself for really having some character.

And I wanna encourage you, I've been through the Life Skills Program for the last two years with a group of guys that we've really gotten to know each other very, very well because it's a trusting environment.

And that's what we're building in MENtrepreneurs. We're building an environment where you can come to know your real character and have tools to work with people around you. Your family, your spouse, and inside of your own life experience.

This personal transformation stuff really does work and it really takes a few years to go through.

Let me congratulate you. This has been as tough as the Hillary Step.

Well done.

Next is the poll and the essay question.

**CODEX ENTRY**

**Date:** 2010-07
**File:** MENtrepreneurs Level One Series - Chapter02.04.md
**Monomyth Stage:** 11 - Resurrection
**Gameboard Position:** Camp 8: Resurrection
**MA5 Domain:** Initium
**Summary:** Daniel Comp and Angelina share their raw personal journey of separation, reconciliation, and core transformation after years of dysfunction, TBI, domestic violence recovery, and repeated business failures. The session features extensive, powerful teaching from Dr. Paul Hegstrom on arrested development, childhood wounds, false belief systems, denial, authority issues, and how the brain can be rewired through becoming teachable and group accountability. Hegstrom explains that we see reality through the lens of our wounds ("we see things the way we are, not the way they are") and that healing takes approximately 36 months of consistent work. Daniel positions this material as the most difficult but most rewarding part of the transformation journey — the Hillary Step of personal Everest.
**Key Insight:** Childhood wounds create false belief systems that sabotage adult life and business until we become teachable, enter safe accountable groups, and replace perception with truth. The brain can be rewired, but it requires time, modeling, and consistent effort.
**Narrative Significance:** This is the emotional and practical heart of Chapter 2. It connects all previous sessions (brain plasticity, onion peeling, personality disorders) into a complete, actionable framework for core transformation. The combination of personal testimony and Hegstrom's teaching makes this one of the most impactful sessions in the entire series for men who have been carrying unhealed wounds into their businesses and relationships.
