Welcome back to the Enterprising Cycle, Chapter Two, Part Three on **Brain Plasticity**.

Now you remember that I said the Enterprising Cycle is decades of wisdom reduced to invaluable hours.

Now I have a background in particle physics and nuclear energy, and this brain plasticity stuff — neither of us are gonna become neuroscientists by looking into this session. But we are gonna see some pretty darn amazing evidence.

You remember that old wives' tale that you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Well, in fact, you can. And we're gonna learn from Jody Miller, who's had a hemispherectomy — I mean, literally has half a brain — that we can in fact learn all kinds of new stuff at any time we choose.

In fact, the evidence that you'll see coming out of Johns Hopkins University or out of the Paul Allen Institute, their research shows us just amazing things about how our brain is created for change, which is really good news for those of us working on personal transformation.

Let's start this off by looking at a clip about Jody Miller's hemispherectomy.

**Jody Miller (child):**  
Cinderella!

**Narrator:**  
We are beginning to harness the brain's incredible ability to invent itself, then reinvent itself throughout life. This girl is a testament to the amazing resilience of the human brain.

Young Jody Miller leads an idyllic life as a nine-year-old girl. You would never guess that she has undergone some of the most drastic surgery imaginable.

Jody's first three years were textbook normal.

Then about six weeks after her third birthday, a storm of epileptic seizures took control of her brain.

She couldn't use her left arm hardly at all. She could barely use the left leg, seizing a good deal of the time, multiple types of seizures.

Ordinary life became impossible. Medicines did nothing, and the seizures threatened to turn fatal.

Desperate, Jody's parents brought her to pediatric neurologist Eileen Vining.

**Dr. Eileen Vining:**  
We found her seizures were all coming from her right hemisphere. And we knew that there is virtually nothing else, nothing but Rasmussen syndrome that can produce that picture in a young child.

**Narrator:**  
Rasmussen syndrome is a degenerative brain disorder that disrupts the electrical activity that makes our brains work. Tiny electrical explosions were flaring up in Jody's right hemisphere. As seizures became almost constant, she lost control of her left side.

Only one radical treatment option remained.

**Dr. Eileen Vining:**  
We knew that she was never going to have her seizures controlled with medicine. And we knew that she and her family faced taking out that half of the brain.

**Narrator:**  
Dr. Vining recommended a daring surgery called a **hemispherectomy**. It would be performed by pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

**Dr. Ben Carson:**  
The whole concept of taking out half of a person's brain would seem to most people impossible. Human beings are incredible creatures with a brain that is beyond belief in terms of its capabilities — to the point where we can take half of it out and still function in a normal way.

**Narrator:**  
85% of our brain consists of the cerebral cortex, which is divided into two hemispheres, each with four main lobes. The cortex handles many of our higher functions. Areas on both sides control thinking, movement, and sensation, but the right side controls our left side and vice versa.

Jody would lose almost all of her right hemisphere and the cavity would fill with cerebrospinal fluid. The operation has to be performed with great precision to avoid damaging the parts of the brain that control Jody's life functions, like heartbeat and breathing.

The surgery went flawlessly.

**Dr. Ben Carson:**  
What we're looking at here is an image, an MRI, that was done on Jody after her surgery. And what it shows us is the fact that we removed her entire right hemisphere. And what we're able to see here is indeed her very normal left hemisphere and all the beautiful gyri of her cortex. And we can see right down the middle, the right hemisphere that was there is now replaced by fluid.

**Narrator:**  
But how could Jody function normally with only one hemisphere? It's because of a miraculous ability of the brain called **plasticity**. Our brains can actually change shape, creating new connections between neurons or brain cells to replace lost or damaged ones.

Jody's left brain started reconnecting almost immediately.

**Jody Miller (older):**  
At least it's good as this. And if I remember correctly, just like you.

**Dr. Ben Carson:**  
This young lady had half her brain removed, went home, I guess maybe 10 days later, and was already walking. She was ambulating. She was able to walk out of the hospital. And that's because her left hemisphere had such resilience, such plasticity, it was able to say, okay, something needs to move her left leg.

**Jody's Mother:**  
Whoa. You're gonna open it? Okay.

**Jody Miller:**  
Here's your topic sentence.

**Dr. Ben Carson:**  
The human brain is just an awesome thing, because every time I look at it, I say to myself, this is the thing that makes this person unique. It still is just such a wonderful thing to find a young person whose life now can move on, who's no longer having seizures, who's developing in a normal fashion.

I take the good with the bad, and I say, this is a bad thing, potentially, that we have to do for an extremely good cause.

**Daniel:**  
Pretty amazing, right?

Next, let's listen to **Jill Bolte-Taylor**, her presentation at TED.

**Jill Bolte-Taylor:**  
I grew up to study the brain because I have a brother who has been diagnosed with a brain disorder, schizophrenia... On the morning of December 10, 1996, I woke up to discover that I had a brain disorder of my own. A blood vessel exploded in the left half of my brain, and in the course of four hours, I watched my brain completely deteriorate in its ability to process all information.

On the morning of the hemorrhage, I could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of my life. I essentially became an infant in a woman's body.

**[She shows a real human brain]**

Our right human hemisphere is all about this present moment. It's all about right here, right now... I felt enormous and expansive. I felt at one with all the energy that was, and it was beautiful there.

And then all of a sudden, my left hemisphere comes back online, and it says to me, "Hey, we got a problem, we gotta get some help."

I affectionately refer to this space as La La Land. But it was beautiful there.

Imagine what it would be like to be totally disconnected from your brain chatter that connects you to the external world... I felt this sense of peacefulness... I felt euphoria. Euphoria. It was beautiful there.

I believe that the more time we spend choosing to run the deep inner peace circuitry of our right hemispheres, the more peace we will project into the world, and the more peaceful our planet will be.

**Daniel:**  
Pretty cool stuff.

Okay, so let's take a look at the **Dan Rather report** on our brain.

**[Dan Rather report excerpt]**

**Dan Rather:**  
Joe Hardy is trying to find a way to train his brain to speed up its sound and vision processing... Using beeps, memory games, and storytelling.

**Michael Merzenich:**  
Previous to maybe 20 years ago, we thought that the brain essentially stopped developing. Your brain was fixed and there was nothing more that could be done with it. Essentially, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

**Dr. Eric Kandel (Nobel Laureate):**  
If we carry on a conversation, or we have a pleasant afternoon together, and you and I remember that tomorrow or a week from now, it's because our brain has been modified as a result of that experience.

**Daniel:**  
That's some really good food for thought, and we're at about a halfway point of this session.

If you're like me, I'm not a superman at learning. I can't leap tall concepts in a single bound. Rather, I've listened to Jim Rohn, who suggests that if we listen well, we would take notes.

**V.S. Ramachandran:**  
One approach... is to look at patients who have sustained damage to a small region of the brain... What you get is a highly selective loss of one function with other functions being preserved intact.

**On phantom limbs and mirror therapy:**  
When the arm was intact but paralyzed, the brain sends commands to the arm... "Move." But it's getting visual feedback saying, "No. Move. No."... We call this learned paralysis.

We said, "What if you now send the command to the phantom, but give him visual feedback that it is obeying his command?" Maybe you can relieve the phantom pain...

I hit on a way of doing this for three dollars... a mirror box.

**Daniel:**  
There's so much to catch in that presentation that I suggest you watch it several times.

For example, I don't know if you noticed the last two seconds — who was sitting in the front row. Watch this. It's Richard Branson, one of the most famous entrepreneurs on the planet.

**[Sebastian Seung on the connectome]**

**Sebastian Seung:**  
We live in a remarkable time, the age of genomics... Your genome is the entire sequence of your DNA... Likewise, every connectome changes over time... The connectome is where nature meets nurture.

**Daniel:**  
And it might be true that just the mere act of thinking can change your connectome — an idea that you may find empowering.

**[Chris Charms on real-time fMRI]**

**Chris Charms:**  
People have wanted to look inside the human mind, the human brain, for thousands of years... Now we have a real technology to do this... We will be able to fly into the anatomy of Peter's brain, literally fly into his body. But more importantly, we can look at his mind.

When Peter moves his arm, that yellow spot you see there is the interface to the functioning of Peter's mind taking place... This is a fourth alternative that you are soon going to have.

**Daniel:**  
That's a massive amount of information to be digesting. I'm proud of you for making it through all of this. Probably some of you have actually listened to it a number of times. Well done.

To summarize, what I really would like to convey with this piece is that our brains are created for change. And that even with half a brain, we can actually do pretty well.

So tragedy, accidents, all sorts of disabilities are not what we used to think they were — that they were traumatic and stopped us from changing. We can in fact choose where we want to go with our life and the outcome that we want.

We can make smart decisions about our exercise, about our nutrition, about managing stress, about getting our sleep, and a number of other tools that we're going to go into — particularly those of change thinking and affirmations and gratitude and modeling.

I hope you heard that modeling is very, very important, as with the phantom limb example. You see, when we have visual and auditory cues, when we have something that we see in another man who's mentoring us, then we can repeat that. We can practice it and actually change the direction that we go over time by building the literal fabric of our brain between our ACC and our DLPFC.

And we're going to get into that in the next piece here.

I hope to give you the confidence that transformation is very possible. It's slow — we're talking very small amount of dendrite growth per day — but it's very possible.
