summary: "In this year-end 'Re deux' episode of Worth Thinking About, Daniel delivers a reflective mashup while on the road in Portland, looking back at 2018 progress from base camp despite anguish, fear, and setbacks. He demonstrates an optical illusion to illustrate that 'we don't see things the way they are, we see things the way we are,' explores personal triggers (noise sensitivity rooted in his cross-country bike trip), plays on the 'now here / nowhere' sign, and interviews Mike Schindler about launching 'America's Greatest Assets' for military and veteran families. The episode stresses pausing to value the wake of choices and sacrifices as essential—not optional—preparation for Camp '19 and continued self-awareness in the Initium expedition."
keypoints:
  - "We don't see things the way they are; we see things the way we are — perception is shaped by our own conditioning, blind spots, and past experiences."
  - "Personal transformation is an expedition: a purposeful journey that surfaces triggers, discomfort, and buried wounds requiring reflection and team support."
  - "Reviewing the 'wake' left by our choices and counting progress made is a requirement for growth, not a luxury, especially after hitting valleys like Death Valley."
  - "Surround yourself with allies who have walked the path; giving back through veteran initiatives (e.g., with Mike Schindler) restores meaning after joint-venture setbacks."
  - "Noise and external chaos can trigger deep emotional memories; learning to manage them through self-understanding is core to perseverance and avoiding the 'Useless Class' lane."

### Original YouTube Description
Where do you go from the bottom of a crevasse? How do you recover from a decent set-back, fall, injury or life event? In this year-end episode of 'Worth Thinking About' we look at the progress made in 2018 by highlighting key points uncovered along the journey. There's a principle not to miss here. Stopping to consider the wake left behind by our choices is critical for valuing sacrifices demanded by the journey. Taking in the view and counting progress is not a luxury - it's a requirement. What happens when you and your partner make different choices? How do you agree to disagree? How do you recover from joint ventures that take longer than either of you want them to? There are at least ten insights revealed in this year's trek to camp '18. Getting to camp '19 will put them all to the test. Your journey of self-awareness and self-understanding will be similar. Get in the conversation and avoid the 'Useless Class' lane going forward. ### Cleaned Transcript
**Daniel:** Off another road trip. When you get your channel up you're gonna have to watch out for your spouse who wants a high jacket. I wanted to give a shout out to Merle at Nissan in the Dalles — that's where our Xterra is at — and he has been so awesome. He has trophies on how awesome he's been as far as customer service goes, so thank you Merle.

Here's an excellent opportunity to step up, be patriotic even if it's unpopular. Brian Kolfage gave three of his limbs for our country. I gave a number of years as a veteran. Maybe you're a vet watching this. Twenty bucks, fifty bucks — hundreds of thousands of people step it up to build a wall. I think it's the right thing to do. I think people that give their life for the security of our country ought to be recognized, so I'm willing to do that. About you?

**Daniel:** Actually have a little time to be a granddad. That's pretty awesome.

**Daniel:** This is Mike Schindler and you guys are all gonna meet him when you log in. Mike, we've been talking. There's some interesting things coming.

**Mike Schindler:** Yeah absolutely. There are applications in what you're doing. So what are we doing? I'm telling you we're getting ready to launch America's greatest assets. So we work with our military and veteran families. We talk about their struggle of what it means to serve, to overcome, and then go on and do something amazing in their community or their company or their household. And so we're gonna be doing that this year. So that's something that we're launching. We've launched it early this year but we're exploding it in 2019 which I'm very excited about. And so working with you Daniel, I'm excited to see where we take it, what we do with it, how we grow it. So it's fun to meet you in person. That's what I think — it's very cool.

**Daniel:** Yeah. And I just want to say Merry Christmas to everybody out there. It's the holidays here so it's good to see you all right my friend.

**Daniel:** Here we are in Portland — Portland waterfront. This is a propeller from a submarine and down there is the submarine. During Vietnam our destroyer cracked one of these. We had to get towed back. We had to eat rations and jet fuel and that's a whole long story. But this week we're gonna look back at what this year was and think about what it looks like from base camp — to have made progress in spite of the anguish, fear, unknown, uncertainty, going somewhere you don't know where you're going, leading guys that want to go. I think that's what the whole thing is about.

**Daniel:** Make sure that this plus is in front of the eye that's staring at it. Close the opposite one and move this card in and out slowly, slowly, the whole time staring right at that plus and you'll see that the dot on the other side of the page disappears. And it's not a magic trick — it's actually the way our eyes are formed and our brain is cross-wired that it sort of fools us to believe it's not there.

Hang on — are you driving your car? Put that phone down. You can't watch this and do this exercise. And you can't watch me do this. You have to participate. Go get the paper, pause this right now. Ready?

**Daniel:** I do this unscripted. I'm doing it. You're watching me. That's so that we can do — we can watch you join the 360MEN expedition, the book, the video series. Come be a part of this whole thing. Learn what this is about. And look at that — it's like... what's that guy that used to have the... you know, I'll think of it and include that here anyway. That's a weird little juxtaposition and then eventually it'll be you. Do I watch as the corpus gets built?

**Daniel:** These are the three different layers. And this episode it's going to be really fun. We're going to talk about illusions. See, the basic premise here is we don't see things the way they are. We see things the way we are. We don't always see things very clearly.

If I wrote up here that I just stuck with me the very first time I heard it — Stephen Hawking — he says, "What monstrosity would walk our streets should their faces be as unfinished as their minds?" Write an admonition to don't just lay around your whole life from a guy trapped in a wheelchair. Use your mind. Think. Spend energy. Use it to figure out where you're going in history. Hope other guys expand their experience and make the process better for others and yourself.

**Daniel:** Welcome to episode... of Worth Thinking About. And you like my own crappies? It's a maze puzzle, alien rock formation. We're thinking about — have you ever tried to go someplace quiet? Go to a coffee shop or a library, hide in your car. Well I tried that out here. You can't get away from noise. It really affects the way you think, the way I think. It'd just be fully engaged all the time and hope things turn out. That's like living underneath a bluff with rocks up there. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Next time you go to get your coffee make sure you get the right size sleeve because they have small and they have large, right? Don't get it mixed up. Small and large. Gotta get your gear on.

**Daniel:** I've been asked to explain a little deeper what personal transformation is like. Well I can give you some of the pieces of what it's like based on what I've experienced. But I need to tell you a story and it starts with a journey with a purpose. Oh that's called an expedition. You've been on one of those before, right?

**Daniel:** Every time a while and it eases on you that's annoying. Stop that. As you did what and you get triggered. And then why did you say you were creeping into any one of my episodes by knowing how to trigger me in a hundred ways? Even if you find the best hotel available anywhere you're gonna find that when you open the bathroom door somebody else's boxers. How's that? Dinner god is it annoying.

Another day with the guys all around town. Ready? You'll have to bear with me. We're on the run meeting guys non-stop so I don't have time to set up in a nice location and chat with you. So follow me on this one if you can. You want to get in the HOV line.

**Daniel:** So there's a relationship between the two. They're both above the ground and sort of are related to each other. Bend those damn frogs and locusts huh. It's now here. Now here. Correct. It's now here. Now here. Really? It says nowhere. It's now here. It's now here not nowhere. Really? They pronounce it now here. Oh I get it. The traffic is now here. The noise is now here. Yeah this is now here not nowhere. I got it. Just dawned on me. I just had an emotional experience about a memory peeled back. Remember that lesson about why this bothers me so much and why is it the noise bugs the heck out of me? Boy pedal across America I can hear them coming. Watch how violent this is. Sue it's shake. Imagine riding your bike across this and then having this passenger. Oh yeah. There's a trigger. Here's some more.

And then another one. Then it all go away. And there'd be nobody gonna be all back to you again on the side of the road. Nice and quiet. Wow yeah yeah it's just an airplane and the butterflies. That's where my triggers come from on noise.

**Daniel:** Yeah good night's sleep. Parsons cod liver oil before bed and diffuse thyme. You can come up with some pretty interesting large idea mapping in contrast to focus mode. You get these really good conceptual ideas on things like this one.

Hey Steven once you show me that Maslow's hierarchy again. Certainly let me escape this event horizon and I'd be keen to explain it.

**Daniel:** Come to episode number 10 of Worth Thinking About. Can you believe it? We have come from absolutely nowhere Daniel. It's now here. Yeah I remember. Yeah absolutely. No fear right? No fear. We're just pushing through which I said it is now here the fair week. What correct? Okay I know wfu are no fear no that's someone you said you said no fear. You have to no affair to talk about no. I'm not doing it not the whole week. This week is no fair no fair no fair seriously no fair no fair no hear what you're set. Okay I'll tell it then.

Here's a true story back in the day I had a 911. Here's something I really think as we're thinking about is it possible to become affluent even with an exponential information platform by telling the truth.

**Daniel:** [Replay from WTA 12 – Death Valley] Even quiet for a couple weeks... yeah been in Death Valley. It's a real temptation to only follow people that are rich but it's really deceptive because how they got there it's not something you can always repeat right? Accepting being 100% wrong half the time... 100% wrong half the time let's think about that for a second. There's no prevailing wind today. In other words the wind's not blowing right now. I'm standing in wind because there are thermals but other than that... 100% wrong half the time.

What happens if both you and your wife, your partner or significant other, are in business as entrepreneurs? You're both doing a start-up. You're both at risk and you're both wrong half the time. That's when we get to play Death Valley.

**Daniel:** When you get your channel up you're gonna have to watch out for your spouse who wants a high jacket. And here's a shout-out that she forgot to put part of it. We are... and then we're yeah we're gonna tell you next week where we're going. I already blew last week though. What do you think? We're not on foot anymore Angelina you...

**Date:** 2018-12-28
**File:** 360MEN WTA 13 - Re deux.md
**Monomyth Stage:** 09 - The Reward
**Gameboard Position:** Camp 9: The Reward
**MA5 Domain:** Initium
**Summary:** Year-end reflective mashup in which Daniel reviews 2018 progress from Portland waterfront, demonstrates perception illusions, surfaces personal noise triggers from his bike trip, interviews Mike Schindler on the veteran families launch, and replays the Death Valley low point to illustrate recovery and the necessity of pausing to value the wake of choices.
**Key Insight:** Taking in the view and counting progress after the Tests is required — not optional — because we see the world as we are; self-awareness expeditions turn triggers and setbacks into the very fuel for the next leg of the journey.
**Narrative Significance:** Marks the first explicit Reward-stage pause in the Scotomaville/Initium arc, modeling how reflection, ally collaboration (Mike Schindler), and honest trigger work prepare the hero to step into Camp '19 with ten hard-won insights intact.
