summary: "In this public-debut outreach video Daniel invites viewers to RSVP for private (in-person or virtual) screenings of the just-released Netflix documentary *The Social Dilemma*. He transparently shows the behind-the-scenes creation process, explains how social media platforms use surveillance capitalism and Dataism to make users 'hackable,' and positions Scotomaville Volume One as the practical guidebook with mental tools to spot the game, develop emotional vocabulary, and reclaim awareness/understanding/discipline. Despite the call to action, no one RSVPed or attended—highlighting the very isolation and unmet expectations the series addresses."
keypoints:
  - "Social media platforms (Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter) employ teams of engineers whose explicit job is to use your psychology against you via surveillance capitalism."
  - "Everything you do online is tracked and recorded; results are personalized (e.g., climate-change searches differ by user profile) by deliberate design."
  - "Scotomaville is the antidote: a digital pop-up guidebook that teaches you how you are being gamed so you can summit your Personal Everest."
  - "'Know Thyself' is no longer a luxury—it is a full-out competition because supercomputers are pointed at our brains."
  - "The slow creep of Dataism and modern 'bread and circuses' can be countered with the 15 cognitive tools from Volume One."
  - "Private screenings were created to foster intelligent conversation; none occurred, underscoring the challenge of building real community in a hyper-connected yet isolated digital age."

### Original YouTube Description

The public debut of Scotomaville features a private screening of the Netflix feature '/The Social Dilemma_'. The combination of industry insights, personal awareness and mental tools will change your day-to-day habits and your world view. Learn how you are being gamed, and what you can do about it without risking your social rewards and coping mechanisms. The classic power grab using 'bread and circuses' is unveiled in the digital pop-up book 'Scotomaville'. You can watch rather than just read the book. You'll recognize the slow creep of Dataism, the messaging games of main-stream media and across the isles in politics. You don't have to accept blindness and ignorance. Learn by experience how you are gamed by social media and information companies. 'The Social Dilemma' features Silicon Valley insiders that reveal how social media is reprogramming civilization by exposing what’s hiding on the other side of our screens. WIKIPEDIA: "The Social Dilemma is a 2020 American docudrama film directed by Jeff Orlowski and written by Orlowski, Davis Coombe, and Vickie Curtis. The film explores the rise of social media and the damage it has caused to society, focusing on its exploitation of its users for financial gain through surveillance capitalism and data mining, how its design is meant to nurture an addiction, its use in politics, its effect on mental health (including the mental health of adolescents and rising teen suicide rates), and its role in spreading conspiracy theories such as Pizzagate and aiding groups such as flat-earthers. The film features interviews with former Google design ethicist and Center for Humane Technology co-founder Tristan Harris, his fellow Center for Humane Technology co-founder Aza Raskin, Asana co-founder and Facebook like button co-creator Justin Rosenstein, Harvard University professor Shoshana Zuboff, former Pinterest president Tim Kendall, AI Now director of policy research Rashida Richardson, Yonder director of research Renee DiResta, Stanford University Addiction Medicine Fellowship program director Anna Lembke, and virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier. The interviews are cut together with dramatizations starring actors Skyler Gisondo, Kara Hayward, and Vincent Kartheiser, which tell the story of a teenager's social media addiction. The Social Dilemma premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and was released on Netflix on September 9, 2020." RSVP for a in-person private screening or virtual meetup. ### Cleaned Transcript

**Daniel:** Hi, I'm Daniel Comp. I'm the author and curator of Scotomaville. And yes we are being transparent—I mean you're getting used to doing things virtually but hardly do you ever get a peek behind the scenes, right? To understand how this stuff really happens for those of us that are creators.

You know most people really don't want to know that they are hackable but most people are also curious about how they are being gamed. You see Scotomaville is a guidebook for you to summit your Personal Everest. Scotomaville is a digital pop-up—you can go to the webpage and watch the book back to Scotomaville, right?

Coupled with the public debut of Scotomaville is the opportunity for a private screening of the documentary *The Social Dilemma*. It's a documentary put together by a number of peers of mine that blow the whistle on what's really going on.

**The Social Dilemma (clip):** When you go to Google and type in "climate change" you're going to see different results depending on where you live and the particular things that Google knows about your interests. That's not by accident—that's a design technique. What I want people to know is that everything they're doing online is being watched, is being tracked. Every single action you take is carefully monitored and recorded. A lot of people think Google's just a search box and Facebook's just a place to see what my friends are doing. What they don't realize is there's entire teams of engineers whose job is to use your psychology against you. I was the co-inventor of the Facebook Like button. I was the president of Pinterest. Google, Twitter, Instagram—there were meaningful changes happening around the world because of these platforms. I think we were naïve about the flip side of that coin.

**Daniel:** The challenge we all have is we don't want to know that we're hackable. No. But we live in an age of rapidly accelerating change. You know the adage "Know Thyself"—it's no longer a luxury, it's a full-out competition because we've got supercomputers pointed at our brains and our biology fools us. You see we don't see things the way they are—we see things the way we are. And that's what Scotomaville is: a guidebook to help you become more aware by learning how you get gamed.

I'm inviting you to RSVP to a private screening of *The Social Dilemma* and that way we can have an intelligent conversation about the slow creep of Dataism—there's a word for you—about the modern-day bread and circuses, about being hackable, about how we're gamed. And I'm going to give you actual tools, insights, experiences with some illusions and some storytelling that you're going to be more aware of the game that's afoot.

If that sounds intriguing, if I built a bridge between you and I of curiosity at least, I'd like you to consider RSVP. Go to scotomaville.com/rsvp, scroll to the bottom, find a date and time that you'd like to attend, fill in the registration form and share your thoughts. And then I look forward to communicating and seeing you out of Scotomaville.

Thanks for watching.
