CDC's signage and art there is Daniel's account. Image: Google Street View screenshot (Apr 2024) by Daniel Comp.* ## The story In October 1993, Tacoma opened a bold new playhouse on Broadway: the Theatre on the Square, with yellow corrugated walls, built as the new home of the Tacoma Actors Guild. On October 19, 1993, the City Council approved TAG's seven-year agreement to use the theatre. That same night a council member invited the public to "a public party" at noon on Saturday, October 23, beside the theatre. Daniel's account is that Comp Design Construction did the signage and art installations at the Theatre on the Square, along with other pieces around the arts district. One of them is a stone monolith at 764 Broadway pressed with his children's handprints and his own. Google Street View still shows it there in April 2024. He remembers the opening day clearly (Daniel's account). The crew finished the signage the same day as TAG's grand opening celebration. He left them on site, drove home, put on a tuxedo, and came back with his then-wife, in her formal dress, in his red Porsche 911. The records don't yet say whether TAG's formal gala was the same day as the October 23 public party. That date stays open until a News Tribune clipping or a TAG program confirms it. ## What the sources show - Tacoma City Council minutes, Oct 19, 1993, as quoted in the search index (my direct download of the PDF failed): "Resolution No. 32371 Authorizing the execution of an agreement with the Tacoma Actors Guild (TAG) for use of the new Theatre on the Square for a period of seven years…" and "Council Member Miller encouraged the public… to go at noon this Saturday, October 23, for a public party at the park above the Pierce Transit facility, adjacent to the Theatre on the Square.
