# "Are We Free from Everything That Encumbers?" A YWAM-Era Exhibit Cairn

**Claim supported:** During his YWAM era, Daniel helped make emotional, graphic exhibit work, one panel of which asks "Are we free from everything that encumbers?" (Daniel's account; year open).

## The story
Some of Daniel's early work was built to make people stop and feel something. This portfolio board shows one exhibit panel. A dark card with a thin red rule carries three short lines of text. Above it sit four photographs: Miss Piggy draped in a turquoise scarf, two gold signet rings, a skeleton in the earth with gold rings still on its fingers, and a young woman in a dark dress holding a clay jar.

Together the images ask the question on the card. The finery we hold on to, the rings that outlast the hand that wore them, and the jar a woman might pour out or keep all point back at the reader.

Daniel's account is that this was exhibit work from his YWAM era. He made it with a team, emotional and graphic work meant to help put right a serious injustice. He calls a piece like this a cairn, a marker stacked on the trail for those who come after, and he still does this kind of work today. Which injustice it answered, and when, are questions we've put to him.
