I was assigned to a conventional powered DDG-20 (USS Goldsborough) out of Pearl Harbor. We immediately headed to the Uganda/Kenya skirmish across the Indian ocean.

The nuclear track ended in Idaho with sixty names on a cut list. The fleet assignment that followed sent Daniel to Pearl Harbor and a Charles F. Adams-class destroyer — conventional powered, guided-missile, one of the workhorses of the Cold War surface fleet. Not the invisible world of reactor physics. The mechanical, electrical, and communications architecture of a working warship.
The IC rating — Interior Communications — turned out to fit the formation more precisely than nuclear power would have. Daniel did not design weapons systems or run propulsion. He worked the CCTV network and the interior communications infrastructure: the ship's ability to see itself, to relay information across compartments, to know what was happening in its own spaces. He was, structurally, the man who made the invisible visible for everyone else aboard. This is the function he has occupied in every community and framework he has built since: not the commander, but the architect of the system that lets everyone else know where they are.
The deployment was immediate and operational: Indian Ocean, the Uganda/Kenya coast, a regional skirmish that placed the ship in a combat-adjacent environment conducting operations the White House would publicly deny. The UPI wire incident — documented separately — emerges directly from this deployment. Daniel did not know yet that reading a denial on air during the operations being denied would produce a fleet admiral on the phone within minutes. He learned.
He tested for advancement during deployment and made IC-2. The Navy's rate-advancement system, unlike its school-selection system, measured something closer to actual competence. Daniel passed. The institution, in this instance, responded to the creator/maker rather than culling him. The stripe mattered — not for the authority it carried, but as confirmation that the system could, when its incentives aligned correctly, see what he was.
After the deployment, the Goldsborough returned to Pearl Harbor. It was there — in Hawaii, in the interval between sea duty and the next school — that Nancy Krog entered the formation record.

Deployment context: July 1976, following the Israeli raid on Entebbe (July 4), Kenya faced potential retaliation from Idi Amin's Uganda. The US Navy deployed the USS Ranger carrier task force to the Indian Ocean as deterrent. The Goldsborough operated in this theater. The UPI wire Daniel read — White House Spokesman flatly denies reconnaissance flights over Kenya — was read during active AWACS operations from the Ranger. The denial and the operations were simultaneous and dateable: July 1976.
The propeller casualty and Frank's cockroach incident: On the return to Pearl Harbor, the Goldsborough threw a propeller blade during a high-speed run while attempting to assist a sinking vessel. The ship limped home on reduced power. The extended passage exhausted food reserves; the crew ate the same canned rations at every meal. When cooks discovered a stashed case of single-serving cereals, seamen swarmed the box. Frank fought his way through the press and returned with an empty bowl and a small box of raisin bran. He ripped the top off and dumped the contents into the bowl. What ran out of the flakes — across the mess table, across the floor, into the corners of the mess hall — were cockroaches. The roaches had been living on the glue in the cereal box seams. The entire ship required fumigation in dry dock.
Daniel's postscript, delivered in one sentence: I then began wondering if the 'raisins' I had previously found in my meatloaf had antennas?
