Working together these men became better people. They escaped hunger and depression to build parks and leave a legacy for us to enjoy. The men of the Civil Conservation Corps left us clues about how to become better men. Daniel Comp visits Palmetto State Park between San Antonio and Houston Texas in the rain to learn about the history of the men that built the park. There's a lot to think about with one's legacy. Daniel: It’s raining. We’re out for a walk. Pretty easy to moan — we had two big sales not go through today.
And then I read this. It’s a legacy of the Great Depression of the 30s — 25% unemployment — and this is a group of guys that volunteered for the Civilian Conservation Corps, a peacetime army that built this state park and this building that’s over here.
Basically, one of the guys — 85-year-old Joe James who was stationed at the park — remembered: “I’d like to mention the quality of the people that came out of there. These guys came in with all kinds of hang-ups and problems and the Civilian Conservation Corps camps straightened a lot of them out. They learned to work. They hadn’t worked before. The Park Service got them and taught them how to do a job. They turned out good buildings but they also turned out a lot of good people that were saved during the Depression.”

These companies enrolled for six months. They were paid thirty dollars a month, but of that $22 to $25 was sent to their family. So they got uniforms, room, board, medical and dental care. And on average they gained 11 and a quarter pounds in the first three months. Look at this group of guys — they got a pretty decent bond.

You see a whole line of these guys passing rock by rock by rock, carrying them up on pallets. A lot of work. A lot of labor. And the masonry will detail — notice how the building comes right up out of the ground. It’s not set on a square foundation; it’s set with the natural foundation. Sort of the architecture of that era. Without people for the Forest Service it’s like a lot of the big lodges up in the mountains.
